Dryer cylinders are the heated drums that dry the paper sheet. The two common constructions are cast iron and steel (welded).
Cast iron dryers
- Traditional, widely available, especially in used/refurbished lines.
- Good thermal mass, proven in standard-speed containerboard machines.
- Heavier; diameters usually 1.5 m or 1.8 m.
Steel (welded) dryers
- Used where higher pressure / thinner shell or larger diameter is needed.
- Essential for Yankee dryers in tissue machines (very large diameter, high pressure).
- Higher fabrication cost; less common in standard second-hand containerboard lines.
Price and performance impact
| Cast iron | Steel | |
|---|---|---|
| Availability (used) | High | Lower |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Typical use | Containerboard, standard speed | Tissue / high-speed |
For most LANCY fluting/testliner sourcing, well-inspected cast iron dryers are the practical choice. Steel dryers matter mainly when you target tissue or very high speed.
